Crowds Attended Airport Dedication
Several thousand people visited Abken Airport at Worthington last Sunday afternoon for the dedication program there. Rain caused some dispersal of the crowd in mid-afternoon.There were more than a dozen planes at the field, and in addition to providing air trips for the spectators, they gave stunt performances and engaged in contest such as spot landing, bombing of targets, etc., furnishing much entertainment for the crowd.
The local [Civil Air Patrol] students served as ushers and guards, and did a splendid job. No trouble of any kind was reported, although Mrs. W. E. Basenback Sr. suffered a fainting spell but was soon revived.
Among the flyers taking part were W. L. Carson of Middleto[w]n, Ohio; M. McGuire, W. Kunkle, Carl Rutledge, Pat O'Timmons, Emory Gillum and Floyd Hall, all of Ashland; Doug Mullins of Flatwoods, K. Graham, W. W. Pointer and W. B. Taylor, all of Charleston, W. Va., L. B. Salisbury of Parkersburg, W. Va., E. W. Lindall and George Undelswart of Marietta, Ohio, C. E. Latta of Huntington, W. Va. and Glen Barrett and Gene Knowl, both of Knox Field [sic].
